Yalumba 'Y Series' Shiraz Viognier 2005

Yalumba
Shiraz, Viognier
$13
Barossa Valley

I recommended this to a local comic artist for his book launch, he originally was offered the Yalumba Shiraz, which is too big and meaty for a social gathering. Unable to get the Shiraz Viognier he went with the Yalumba Cabernet Sauvignon, a more casual, easy drinking. I hope it went down well.

Yalumba is old skool having been around for 150 years, and apparently still family owned. The Y series is sort of the new skool side, funky wine labels, big flavours, cheap and accessible.

The wine in question has a nice medium flavour with a lick of the spicy but not too strong in the meaty shiraz flavour - the shiraz is tempered by the viognier, that gives it a very slight sweetness. A little bit middle of the road with its flavours - not very shirazy, not very viogniery - there's no money shot to spike my interest. Though, in terms of balance it is pretty nice and in terms of value for money - its pretty good. If I was having a dinner party for 8 and serving a mild pasta dish, i'd have a half dozen of these to go around.

7/10
